The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, with over 3 million tests taken in the last year.
It is a test that assesses all of your English skills— reading, writing, listening and speaking, and is designed to reflect how you will use English at study, at work, and in your life abroad. The IELTS test is developed by some of the world’s leading experts in language assessment. It has an excellent international reputation, and is accepted by over 10,000 organizations worldwide, including schools, universities, organizations, immigration councils and professional and governmental bodies.
IELTS is one the most widely accepted English language test that uses a one-on-one speaking test to assess your English communication skills. This means that you are assessed based on your ability to converse in a real-life conversation. This is the most effective and natural way of testing your English conversation skills.
There are two types of the IELTS test: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Listening and Speaking are the same for both tests, but the subject matter of the Reading and Writing components differs depending on which test you take.
The Listening, Reading and Writing components of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them. The Speaking component, however, can be completed up to a week before or after the other tests. Your test centre will advise. The total test time is2 hours and 45 minutes.
The Academic version is for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and General Training for those migrating to Australia, Canada and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programs and work experience in an English-speaking environment. Both versions provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
